City of Westerville Donates Tree Chips to Westerville North’s Composting Project
In a continuing effort to develop a composting project, Westerville North High School teachers have been working with Matt Ulrey, Parks & Urban Forest Manager for the City of Westerville’s Parks & Recreation Department. Through Ulrey’s efforts, North was able to receive a truckload of tree chips from Davey Tree Company on June 16. These wood chips will be used as an organic approach to soil enhancement in the composting area at North.  Click headline to read more!

Dobson Sisters to be Honored with Memorial Peace Garden
PBJ Connections, a non-profit organization that provides equine-assisted psychotherapy to at-risk youth and families, is constructing a Family Peace Garden in memory of Westerville sisters Nicole and Sarah Dobson, who were tragically killed last December. The cost of the garden materials after Spellacy’s Turf-Lawn donation is approximately $7,000. Click the headline above to see a list of items needed to build this peaceful retreat.

SPLASH Enrichment Academy Expands in Response to Popularity
The program was expanded to two weeks this year and now includes middle school student participation. All Three Westerville High Schools Make Newsweek’s Best List
Each year, Newsweek picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced placement college-level courses and tests. Westerville Students Receive President’s Volunteer Service Award
In conjunction with their service throughout the year as the 2009 Ohio FIRST/LEGO League (FLL) Ambassadors, the members of Blendon’s Turbulent Typhoons Robotics Engineering Team received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Somali Moms Thank District Educators by Hosting an Appreciation Banquet
“Appreciation is the highest form of prayer, for it acknowledges the presence of good wherever you shine the light of your thankful thoughts.” That’s what an invitation stated, which was sent by Somali moms to educators in the Westerville City School District, who filled the Westerville South High School cafeteria to sample an enormous variety of delicious ethnic dishes prepared by the grateful group.  Click headline to read more!

Marty Wicks Named Ohio School Resource Officers’ Teacher of the Year
Marty Wicks, a sixth grade mathematics teacher at Heritage Middle School, has been named Teacher of the Year by the Ohio School Resource Officers Association. Wicks was nominated for the honor by Sara Rath, School Resource Officer at Genoa Middle School.

Schneider’s Bakery Raises more than $6,000 for Faith Pruden Family
Faith Pruden, a first grade student at Emerson World Languages & Cultures Magnet School, always thought it would be neat to have her own bakery. That dream came true on May 24, thanks to the combined efforts of Westerville City Schools personnel and Schneider’s Bakery in Uptown Westerville. The name of the store was changed to Faith’s Bakery for that day and in the end, $6,105.87 was raised for the family.  Click headline to read more!

Streamlining of Westerville City Schools’ leadership structure continues in effort to strengthen organizational capacity, meet future district needs
Several changes to the Westerville City School District’s leadership structure will be in place for the 2010-11 school year. Latino Families Learn to Travel by COTA Bus
As part of the Westerville City Schools English as a Second Language (ESL) Community Outreach program, the Latino Parents’ Group, on May 21st , invited the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) representatives to their monthly meeting to teach them how to get around town on COTA buses. Volunteers Cherished Throughout the Westerville School District
The Westerville Parent Council PTA tracks the activities of 33 PTAs, PTSAs, PTOs and booster groups. During the 2008-2009 school year, it was learned that these individuals collectively donated $590,373 to the school district and volunteered 101,034.6 hours. At $10 per hour, volunteer time was valued at more than $1 million, or 63 full-time-equivalent employees. In addition, parent organizations awarded $53,550 in scholarships to graduates in the Class of 2009. Westerville City Schools Lauded for Excellence in Financial Reporting
The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the Westerville City School District by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

Board Adopts 2011-2012 Calendar for Westerville City Schools
At its Regular Meeting on October 12, 2009, the Westerville City School district adopted a calendar for the 2011-2012 school year.
