| SPLASH Enrichment Academy Expands in Response to Popularity |
 |
Students were trying to classify different macroinvertebrates in a “dry” stream bed, which was provided by Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation. Macroinvertebrates populations indicate water quality. Even after the heavy rains this summer, macroinvertebrates found on June 14 earned Alum Creek a “good” water quality rating.
The second year of the Summer SPLASH Enrichment Academy brought some changes from its first year in 2009. The program was expanded to two weeks this year and now includes middle school student participation. These changes were made in response to parent feedback from the 2009 SPLASH program.
The academy is opened to students entering grades 2-8 and runs from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday during the weeks of June 14 and 21. Students could select a course during one or both weeks. All sessions are taught by Westerville teachers and include offerings across all content areas, including math, science, visual and performing arts, technology, social studies, and language arts. Approximately 115 students are participating each week in the academy, held this year at Genoa Middle School and Alum Creek Park.
